Is there anything so symbolic to solitude as a marshy wetland in the late afternoon?I was on a day trip to Winding Waters in West Palm Beach, FL, hoping to capture that feeling in a photograph. The quiet, the peacefulness, the stillness of the water. All while life is humming along just beneath the surface of what appears to be a calm, lifeless area. Who could have imagined, that in the middle of a city, there could exist a place so un-citylike and untamed? This is Winding Waters. An island of calm just minutes from the hustle and bustle of the suburbs. It was a beautiful sunny day, late in the afternoon when I headed out along a trail leading deep into the wetlands. The ground was damp and squishy underfoot in some places, while other parts of the trail were covered by a narrow boardwalk, and even paved in some areas. Signs warning of wildlife kept my head on a swivel as I searched for photographic opportunities. While I haven’t tested the fact, I’d heard that alligators can be really fast when they want to be, and I had no desire to find out. I walked slowly and quietly - wanting to respect the nature surrounding me (and most likely surprising any gators that might be lurking! Probably not the best idea!)Earthy scents filled my head as I closed my eyes occasionally to ground myself with where I was. Birds were calling to each other as they began to settle in for the evening to come. Rounding a curve in the trail, I came upon this scene. It was so still. So serene. I had to stop and capture it!Still moving slowly and quietly as to not disturb any creatures that might be nearby, I set up my tripod and camera. While I took several shots, I took in my surroundings and created a memory of this exact time and place, not to be forgotten.
