Problem Strings for Fluency and Beyond: Grade Three

Problem strings consist of carefully crafted sequences of related math problems that help students develop robust mathematical reasoning. More tightly crafted than number talks to rely on more than just talk, they are designed to ensure fluency and progressive mathematical development. This unit aligns with the CCSS grade three objectives and is part of a new mathematics series on fluency that is a companion to k-5 Contexts for Learning Mathematics. This book provides problem strings to support addition and subtraction within 1000, and to develop multiplication within 100 using models such as the open number line, ratio table, and array. It also contains strings with fractions on the double number line, strings to support the representation and interpretation of data, and geometry strings to support reasoning with shapes and the decomposing of them into equivalent fractional areas.
